Preserving History, Securing the Future

On-going Restoration

At Bangor Children’s Home d.b.a. Hilltop School, we are dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming, and enriching environment for children and families in our community. Our historic building, originally constructed in 1869, has been a cornerstone of Bangor for over 150 years. Recognized for its historical significance, it was added to the National Historic Register in 1975. However, with history comes the responsibility of preservation, and maintaining a building of this age requires ongoing care and attention.

Thanks to the generous support of the City of Bangor and the ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds we were awarded, we have been able to embark on critical restoration projects to ensure our building remains a safe and functional space for generations to come.

Renovation Progress

With the awarded ARPA funds, we have made significant strides in our restoration efforts:

  • New Retaining Wall: We have completed the construction of a brand-new retaining wall outside, providing structural stability and enhancing the safety of our property.
  • Interior Flooring Replacement: Inside the building, we have begun replacing aging flooring, improving both safety and aesthetics for the children and staff who utilize our space daily.
  • Classroom Enhancements: We are in the process of replacing shelving and cubbies within the classrooms, as well as giving each room a fresh coat of paint to create a bright and welcoming learning environment.
  • Fire Code Updates: We have completed important fire code updates to ensure our building meets the latest safety standards, providing a safer environment for all occupants.
  • Electrical Work: Much-needed electrical upgrades have been completed to enhance safety and efficiency, ensuring the well-being of the children and staff in our facility.

The Next Phase: Exterior Restoration

While we have made great progress, there is still important work to be done. Our next major initiative is the restoration of the building’s exterior, which includes:

  • Roof repairs and replacement
  • Restoration of dormers and windows
  • Gutter repairs and drainage improvements
  • General structural maintenance to preserve the historic integrity of our building

While we still have remaining ARPA funds that will go toward these efforts, they will only cover part of the costs.

To complete the full scope of the necessary exterior restorations, we need your help.
